Driveway crack being filled with flexible sealant

Driveway crack repair

Cracks or holes less than ¼ inch wide generally pose no structural threat and can be filled or patched, but that is a temporary fix because patches aren't watertight. The same crack and patch methods apply to walks and patios on our concrete repair page.

How a crack gets filled

The usual crack-repair steps: chisel the crack out to a backward-angled cut, clean out the loose material, brush on a thin layer of bonding adhesive, fill, and feather the surface level. For cracks ½ inch or wider, a backer rod or sand goes into the crack before the filler.

When cracks mean replacement

For Dallas-area drives, the signs that point to replacing rather than repairing are alligator cracking, sections sitting more than an inch or two higher or lower than their neighbors, spalling across more than 20 to 30 percent of the surface, and cracks wider than a quarter inch. When it comes to that, our page on concrete driveway replacement covers the new pour.

Outside the city, Garland Elite Concrete also covers concrete driveway repair in Wylie.

Spalled, sunken and broken driveway sections

Spalling

Spalled driveways most often trace back to deicing salts, poor finishing, too much water in the mix and improper curing, and extensive spalling usually means ripping out and replacing the slab. Nationally, spalling repair runs $3 to $5 per square foot, or $1,800 to $4,200 for a two-car (600-square-foot) driveway.

Sunken sections

A drive that sinks in spots most likely sits on a poorly compacted subgrade or has soil eroding beneath it. Slabjacking can raise the section back to its original position by pumping a mix of sand, cement and fly ash under it. Our concrete leveling page compares mudjacking and foam.

Replacing a broken panel

A damaged section can be replaced while the rest of the slab stays, though matching the color of new concrete to the old can be a challenge. The City's material rule for driveways (4 inches of concrete, Number 3 bars at 18 inches on center, set on chairs) is the benchmark for the new panel. The City's pages require a permit to pour or widen a driveway but say nothing specific about replacing a panel, so confirm with Building Inspection before work starts.

Driveway repair cost in Dallas

Concrete driveway repair in the Dallas area averaged $1,693 in 2026 figures, with most jobs between $747 and $2,772. A few hairline cracks keep the bill near the $300 minimum, while deep potholes or a sinking slab push it toward $5,500. A common rule of thumb: once more than 25% of a driveway is damaged, resurfacing or replacement is more cost-effective.

Questions about damaged driveways

What is the best material to patch a concrete driveway?

It depends on the damage. Epoxy filler is the usual choice for cracks ⅛ inch wide or smaller. For thin surface repairs, QUIKRETE's Re-Cap resurfacer, a polymer-modified portland cement product, goes on from a feather edge up to 1/2 inch. For spalled spots, the first option is a patch with a color-matching compound.

Can you repair a badly cracked concrete driveway?

Up to a point. A severely cracked or damaged drive should never be resurfaced, and replacement is worth considering for concrete driveways older than 25 years or with multiple large cracks, buckling or drainage issues. Garland Elite Concrete will talk through which side of that line your drive is on at the free estimate.

What can you put over a cracked concrete driveway?

Cracks wider than ¼ inch, spalling and discoloration can be covered with resurfacing or a concrete overlay. QUIKRETE's resurfacer data sheet cautions that cracks can still reflect up through the new surface, especially where the slab lacks adequate control joints or settles. Nationally, driveway resurfacing ran $3 to $9 per square foot in 2026 figures.

How long does a driveway repair last?

Any repair is temporary, although some last longer than others, possibly many years. The method matters: properly done mudjacking holds for 5 to 10 years or longer, polyjacking for 10 to 15 years or longer, and resurfacing for 8 to 15 years on average.

Can a sunken driveway be lifted instead of replaced?

It can be, if the concrete is sound and the cause is dealt with. Nationally, lifting a small sinking section runs $600 to $1,200, and leveling an entire driveway $1,400 to $2,700. InterNACHI, the home inspectors' association, says mudjacking isn't appropriate where the surface is spalling or damaged, where the slab has risen from expansive soil rather than sunk, or where the cause of the settling isn't addressed.
