Pool deck finishes for grip and heat

  • Cool-deck topping 1/8 in. max (Mortex)
  • 40% smooth, 60% void
  • Spray deck 1/4 in. max (Euclid Chemical)
  • At least 300 sq ft per Kool Deck unit

Broom, rock salt and exposed aggregate

A brushed or broom finish adds slip-resistant texture to a pool deck, and a rock salt finish is a low-cost, easy way to add subtle texture and slip resistance to plain or colored concrete. Exposed aggregate, with its pebble-like finish, is especially well-suited to pool decks because it's highly slip resistant.

Stamped pool decks

Stamped concrete gives a deck the look of brick, slate or cobblestone. Stamped and textured surfaces drain more slowly than smooth ones because water collects in the pattern, and traction can be improved with a textured overlay or a clear plastic grit mixed into the sealer.

Cool-deck toppings

The original Keystone Kool Deck topping was invented by Mortex in 1962. The maker says it significantly lowers the surface temperature of concrete and creates a non-skid, textured surface. Its contractor brochure puts the best surface at not more than 1/8 inch thick, finished about 40% smooth and 60% void to prevent craze cracking, with each properly mixed unit covering at least 300 square feet.

Building a new concrete pool deck

The slab under the finish

For a slab that will take a Kool Deck topping, Mortex says to order a five-bag mix, "a little on the rocky side", and notes that a six-bag mix gives a faster cure and higher strength. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) puts the maximum spacing of contraction joints at 24 to 36 times the slab thickness, about 10 feet for a 4-inch slab, and no more than 15 feet.

Slope and drainage

Exterior slabs should fall at least 2%, a 1/4-inch drop for every foot. Near the house, the 2015 International Residential Code that Garland has adopted requires paved surfaces within 10 feet of the foundation to slope at least 2 percent away from the building, the same rule that governs concrete patios.

Clay under the deck

Houston Black clay, the most common soil mapped inside Garland's city limits, takes in water rapidly when it is dry and cracked and very slowly when it is moist, according to the USDA. On expansive clay, the usual defense is good compaction first, then drainage to keep the soil from getting wet.

Outside the city, Garland Elite Concrete also builds concrete pool decks in Heath.

Pool deck resurfacing and sealing

Spray decks and overlays

Euclid Chemical lists pool decks among the common uses of its spray-down deck coating, which goes on no more than 1/4 inch thick, is sealed after at least 24 hours of drying, and can have a grip additive mixed into the sealer. Stamped overlays are typically applied 1/4 to 3/4 inch thick and, done properly, should last 10–20 years or more. Butterfield Color's overlay data sheet adds that existing control joints must be carried up through the new layer. More on overlays is on our concrete resurfacing page.

Sealing in Texas sun

The American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) says high-traffic and sun-exposed areas should receive new sealer every 2-3 years. Water-based sealers go on only when the air and concrete are 45°F and rising, but not above 90°F, and anti-skid additives can be mixed into the sealer; the ASCC says adding sand is not recommended.

Pool deck questions

How much is a new concrete pool deck?

Nationally, a poured concrete pool patio typically costs $5 to $15 per square foot and a stamped concrete one $8 to $19. The closest local figures are for patios: in 2026 Dallas-area prices, a broom finish ran $6 to $13 per square foot, exposed aggregate $7 to $18 and stamped $9 to $30.

How long does pool deck resurfacing last?

A high-quality, professionally installed resurfacing product can be expected to last 8 to 15 years on average, sometimes up to 25 years with consistent maintenance and a favorable climate. The most common causes of early failure are low-quality materials, inadequate surface preparation, and mistakes during mixing or application.

Can a cracked pool deck be resurfaced?

It depends on the cracks. Resurfacing suits concrete with minor flaking or cracks less than 1/4 inch wide; replacement is the better call where there are large cracks, crumbling, spalling or structural problems, or where the new layer would need to be more than two inches thick. Cracks that are deep, wide or spreading, especially with one side higher than the other, may be signs of settlement and subgrade instability.

How soon can you use a new pool deck?

Wait at least 24 hours before walking on new concrete; the whole curing period is about 28 days. Where a Kool Deck topping goes on fresh concrete, Mortex says it carries its own sealer and curing agents, and owners should stay off it and keep furniture off for approximately 21 days.

Do I need a permit for a pool deck in Garland?

The City's pages list no separate permit for a plain concrete slab, so call Building Inspection at 972-205-2300 before work starts. A patio or porch cover over the deck does need a building permit: $0.52 per square foot (minimum $100) plus a 25% processing fee (minimum $25). City approval doesn't replace any HOA approval.
