Concrete Patios in Murphy, Texas

Garland Elite Concrete pours concrete patios in Murphy, Texas, sized and finished for the way a back yard gets used, from a plain broom-finished slab for a table and grill to a thicker pour under an outdoor kitchen, fireplace or hot tub. Murphy's permit list names patios, patio covers, pergolas, fire pits and outdoor kitchens, so we'll plan the slab and the permits together.

The City of Murphy describes itself as about 5.7 square miles, bordered by Plano, Richardson, Wylie, Sachse and Parker, and located mainly at the crossroads of FM 544 and Murphy Road. It sits two miles south of Southfork Ranch. We serve homes across it, from the neighborhoods near Murphy Central Park on North Murphy Road and the Maxwell Creek Trail to Timbers Nature Preserve, Travis Farm Park on Skyline Drive and Waters Edge Park on Creekside Drive.

A backyard concrete patio with a seat wall or a pergola

Patios for outdoor kitchens, fire pits and covers

Murphy's fee schedule charges $100.00 each for an arbor or patio cover, an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, and an outdoor kitchen, on top of the $100.00 residential flatwork permit for the slab itself.

Thickness under heavy features

A patio slab is generally at least 4 inches thick, but a hot tub or outdoor fireplace calls for 5 to 6 inches. For scale, a 12-by-12-foot patio 4 inches thick takes about 1.78 cubic yards of ready-mix concrete. The City's flatwork handout lists no thickness or strength for private slabs; the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association's figure for exterior slabs is 4,000 psi, consistent with the ACI 332 residential code.

Slope and drainage

The U.S. Department of Energy's Building America guide says patios, porch slabs and walks within 10 feet of a foundation should slope away at a 2% grade, and ENERGY STAR recommends at least 0.25 inch per foot. We'll talk through where water goes before the forms are set.

Choosing a patio finish

A plain broom texture is the NRMCA's standard for a non-slip exterior slab. From there the options are decorative. Exposed aggregate is rugged and nonskid, needing little beyond sealing and occasional cleaning. Integral color runs through the whole batch but usually comes in earth tones and pastels, while color hardener tints only the top layer, gives a more intense color and densifies the surface. Stamped patterns and stains round out the list.

Dallas-area 2026 prices for each finish are in the ticket; labor makes up 40% to 60% of the total, or $35 to $60 an hour for an experienced concrete pro. They're typical Dallas averages, not our price list.

Keeping a patio looking new

With proper care, a concrete patio can last 30+ years without major repairs, and resurfacing with new stain or a stamped overlay every 10+ years keeps it looking new. Ohio Concrete's industry recommendation is to wait until 30 days after placement to seal.

From Collin County farmland to a turnpike suburb

The first settlers arrived in 1846, drawn by Peters Colony land grants, says the Handbook of Texas. The City of Murphy names Comfort and Lydia McMillen, who came from Arkansas with their six children and settled on a branch of Muddy Creek later called Maxwell Creek. The town took William Murphy's name when the St. Louis Southwestern Railway arrived in 1888 on land he provided, and it stayed a farming community into 1970, shipping cotton, corn and onions. The Old Murphy Schoolhouse was built in 1938 as a WPA project.

Growth came late. The Handbook counts 136 residents in 1970, 1,547 in 1990 and 3,099 in 2000. In the 1980s families moved in on lots of 1 to 5 acres, and the City says residential growth has been strong since the President George Bush Turnpike opened in 2000. The 2020 Census counted 21,013 people.

What the housing looks like

About half of Murphy's housing was built before 2005 and half after, going by the Census Bureau's 2020–2024 median; about 81% of units date from 2000 or later, and about 98% are single-family detached. Owners live in about 94% of occupied homes, and the survey's median value for an owner-occupied house is $555,500. The SF-E estate district requires lots of at least 40,000 square feet.

Parks and landmarks

Murphy Central Park, at 550 North Murphy Road, has an amphitheater seating 2,500 to 3,000, a 2-acre stocked pond and about 0.6 miles of 8-foot concrete trail linking to the Maxwell Creek Trail. Timbers Nature Preserve was first built in 2000 as Murphy City Park and was renovated and expanded in 2015, and Murphy Marketplace, built in 2008 at North Murphy Road and East FM 544, is the city's main shopping center.

City permits for patio work

Murphy's residential flatwork handout says a building permit is required for all types of residential flatwork, with a pre-pour inspection and a building final. Permits go through the Customer Service Department (972-468-4100), and the fee is due when you submit.

If the work touches the driveway approach, curbs or drainage, the City also requires a utility permit. Any driveway connecting to a public street needs approval first, and the city engineer approves all driveway cuts. Retaining walls and screen walls carry their own $100.00 permit.

The handout doesn't set a thickness, strength or joint spacing for private flatwork, and the City's permit list gives no height at which a retaining wall needs a permit, so confirm current standards with the City before work starts.

Summer heat and the ground underneath

NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put the June-August average high at DFW Airport at 94.3°F, and the NRMCA says wind over 5 mph, low humidity and high temperatures raise the risk of plastic shrinkage cracks, which form when the surface dries before the concrete sets. In cooler months it wants new concrete kept above 50°F while it cures.

The Soil Science Society of America's booklet on Houston Black, Texas' unofficial state soil and a Blackland Prairie clay, explains the cracking: the soil is high in smectite, a clay that swells as it gets wet, shrinks as it dries and cracks the ground. We'll look at the soil and drainage at your house before planning the base.

More outdoor concrete work

Besides patios, we pour stamped and stained concrete, pool decks, steps, sidewalks and driveway extensions. In Murphy's SF-PH patio-home district, each home needs two extra parking spaces on a paved driveway, and in any residential district a driveway may be no wider than the garage or parking space it serves and never more than 55 percent of the front yard.

Beyond the city limits, Garland Elite Concrete pours stamped concrete driveways in Parker and patio extensions in Sachse.

How a patio job goes

The usual order of work, from the first call to the final inspection.

  1. First call

Reach us by phone or the form at any hour. Tell us roughly how big the patio should be and what will sit on it.

  2. Site visit and design

We'll look at the yard's grade, where the water runs and where the patio meets the house, then talk through size, thickness and finish.

  3. City and HOA approvals

The flatwork permit comes from the Customer Service Department, with separate permits for a cover, fire pit or outdoor kitchen, and your HOA weighs in where covenants apply.

  4. Forms and inspection

Forms, base and reinforcement go in, and the City makes its pre-pour inspection.

  5. Pour, cure and final

The slab is poured, finished and kept from drying out while it cures, and the building final closes the permit.

Patio permit questions in Murphy

Do I need a permit to replace an old patio in Murphy?

Yes. The City's flatwork handout requires a building permit for all types of residential flatwork, and the fee schedule's $100.00 residential flatwork line covers new work, additions and alterations. Starting work without a permit doubles the fee.

Does my HOA have to approve a new patio?

The City tells homeowners to contact their Home Owners Association for additional requirements from deed restrictions and covenants. City approval and HOA approval are separate, so check both before the pour is scheduled.
