Colored landscape curbing around a flower bed

How landscape curbing is installed

General practice for extruded curbing; your estimate covers your yard.

Curbing machine extruding a concrete border
  1. Cut the edge

A strip of sod about 9 inches wide is cut away along the outside edge of the existing landscaping.

  2. Mix on site

The concrete is mixed on a self-contained trailer, with color added to the exact measurement for the job. It is a dry mix that resembles wet sand.

  3. Extrude the border

The mix is fed into the curbing machine and extruded into one continuous border that follows the bed line.

  4. Cut control joints

Control joints are cut 1/2 inch into the curb about every 12 to 18 inches.

  5. Seal

A sealer goes on to prevent fading, and resealing is good maintenance.

How long the job takes

Curbing is normally a 1-day project. Concrete edging takes less than 1 hour to pour, 1 to 2 days to dry and 4 weeks to fully cure.

Curbing profiles, color and strength

  • About 3,000 psi (verify)
  • Joints every 12 to 18 in.
  • 1/2 in. joint depth
  • 9 in. sod cut

Profiles

Common profiles include a 4x6 mold used mostly for dividing flower beds, and a stampable mold that presses brick or stone textures into the border.

Color that lasts

Curbing is colored with integral color, mixed into the concrete, and sealed to prevent fading. Resealing is good maintenance practice.

Strength and mowing

Curbing can be as strong as 3,000 psi, a figure worth confirming with the installer, and will take the weight of a mower riding along its edge. In most cases reinforcing fibers are used in the mix.

Landscape curbing, street curbs and retaining walls

Street curb and gutter

Landscape curbing is a yard border, not a street curb. Street curb and gutter follows standards such as TxDOT's Item 529, which builds it from Class A concrete with a 3,000 psi minimum design strength and cures it for at least 72 hours, and Garland's local streets with mountable curbs switch to a standard 6-inch curb at inlets and intersections. In Garland, no one may build, repair, remove or replace any curb or gutter on public property without the needed permits, and the owner beside a curb must keep it in good and safe condition. Our curb and gutter page covers that work.

When a border has to hold back soil

Where a bed is raised above the lawn or a slope needs holding back, the job becomes a retaining wall. Under the 2015 IRC, retaining walls not braced at the top that hold back more than 48 inches of unbalanced fill must be designed to accepted engineering practice, and Garland requires a permit ($88, issued as a fence permit) for a retaining wall any part of which is 4 feet or taller, or that holds a surcharge. Our concrete retaining walls page covers them.

Borders along walks

Because the machine follows any curve, a border can run along a garden path as well as a bed. For the path itself, see our concrete sidewalks page.

Curbing questions homeowners ask

How much does concrete curbing usually cost?

In 2026 figures, poured concrete curbing costs $4 to $5 per square foot for materials, with labor and installation adding $5 to $13 per square foot, and Dallas projects come in at $750 to $1,600. Priced by length instead, it runs $5 to $18 per linear foot installed (national).

Is concrete landscape curbing worth it?

That depends on what you want from the border. Extruded curbing is one continuous piece that follows any curve, is colored through and sealed against fading, can be as strong as 3,000 psi and takes a mower riding along its edge, and most jobs take a day. Against that, the average job runs $400 to $2,200 nationally, and resealing is part of good maintenance.

How to do your own concrete curbing?

It's machine work: the dry mix, which resembles wet sand, is blended on a self-contained trailer and fed into a curbing machine that extrudes the border. Before the curb goes down, a strip of sod about 9 inches wide is cut along the bed. After the pour, the edging needs 1 to 2 days to dry and 4 weeks to fully cure.

Will curbing crack over time?

The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association says it isn't possible to make completely crack-free concrete, and treats joints as planned cracks. That's why control joints go 1/2 inch into the curb about every 12 to 18 inches, and in most cases the mix contains reinforcing fibers.

Do I need a permit for landscape curbing in Garland?

For any curb or gutter on public property, yes: Garland's code bars building, repairing, removing or replacing them without the needed permits, including a Right-of-Way Permit. The City's permit pages cover driveways, approaches, public sidewalks, patio covers, retaining walls and foundation repair; for a border in a private yard, call Building Inspection at 972-205-2300 before work starts, as the City advises when you're unsure. City approval doesn't replace any HOA approval.
